Course Description:
This course provides an in-depth exploration of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, an evidence-based and extensively researched psychotherapy approach for treating trauma and other distressing life experiences. Participants will learn the theoretical foundations of EMDR, including the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, the eight phases of treatment, and the three-pronged approach. The course also covers the neurobiological underpinnings of trauma, how maladaptively stored memories impact functioning, and how EMDR facilitates adaptive resolution through bilateral stimulation and dual awareness. Practical strategies for explaining EMDR to clients and guiding them through grounding, relaxation, and self-regulation techniques will be provided.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 1) Explain the core principles and evidence base of EMDR therapy. 2) Describe how trauma impacts memory and how the AIP model guides EMDR treatment. 3) Summarize the EMDR treatment structure, including the eight phases and three-pronged approach. 4) Demonstrate ways to explain EMDR to clients and introduce basic grounding techniques.
