Course Description:

People with disordered eating and poor body image are so often undiagnosed, untreated, judged, and misunderstood. Prenatal treatment is the perfect opportunity to catch and address these insidious mental health problems. This course will provide you with the clinical tools necessary to help mindfully and compassionately combat this widespread problem in the mental health field, while learning to assess and treat disordered eating & poor body image in your clinical practice. In this training, you will learn how to non-judgmentally assess and treat disordered eating & poor body image in a prenatal population. In this course, we will also explore how the nature of eating disorders often necessitates a community or family – rather than individualistic – approach. Methods for involving both family members, friends, and professionals from a variety of disciplines will be discussed. Along with a community/family approach to the treatment of eating disorders, a focus on experiential avoidance will be emphasized. Here, eating disorder behaviors (e.g., food restriction, avoidance, purging, obsessionality, etc.) will be framed as avoidance of aversive internal experiences such as fear of fatness, fear of the consequences of weight gain (e.g., abandonment, rejection, losing status/power etc.), internal physical sensations (e.g., fullness), and thoughts (e.g., “I’m a failure if I gain weight”). Methods for addressing experiential avoidance of these internal experiences and improving body image through various exposure exercises will be covered. Throughout this course, dialogue and questions will be encouraged.
